The Sharjah Container Terminal, established in 1976 was the first purpose built and fully equipped modern Container Terminal in the Middle East. It is adjacent to Sharjah's industrial area which accommodates over 45 % of the non oil manufacturing capacity of the UAE.

The existing facility consists of 786 metres of quay, three berths with 11.5 metres draft and a terminal area of 150,000 sq. metres. SCT has storage facility for over 8500 TEU's and a 9300 sq. metre dedicated transit shed and storage area for LCL cargo.

SCT is equipped with two ship to shore Quay Cranes, three 104 tonne Liebherr and Gottwald Mobile Harbour Cranes, five Rubber Tyred Gantry Cranes and ample auxiliary container and cargo handling equipment.

KHORFAKKAN CONTAINER TERMINAL - GULFTAINER

Gulftainer's Khorfakkan Container Terminal (KCT) has been named 'Shipping Port of the Year' at the Annual Supply Chain and Transport Awards (SCATA 2011) in Dubai. The Awards, which are in their fifth year, are organised by magazine publisher ITP Business, and have established themselves as the ultimate celebration of the Middle East logistics industry's achievements.

The Award follows on the heels of Gulftainer's recent announcement that it achieved record volumes at its two UAE terminals in April, experiencing its highest ever monthly throughputs.

The 'Shipping Port of the Year' award is one of a number of awards in various categories covering the logistics, sea freight and air cargo sectors, and is awarded to the port authority or terminal operator that has delivered world-class services and facilities across the Middle East in the past 12 months.
Khorfakkan is one of the world's leading container transhipment ports. It is strategically located on Sharjah's Indian Ocean coast, outside the sensitive Straits of Hormuz and close to the main east-west shipping routes. It is only three hours from the UAE's main centres of population, Dubai, Sharjah and Abu Dhabi on the Arabian Gulf coast.

Khorfakkan's location makes it an obvious choice for shipping lines with large transhipment volumes, who also require easy access to the UAE hinterland. KCT is an ideal transhipment hub port with numerous feeder ship connections to Gulf Ports, India, Pakistan and East Africa.

Phase 2 of a major expansion has recently been completed, providing 6 Super Post-Panamax gantries, and 4 Mega-max Tandem-Lift cranes on 800 metres of berth, with 16 metres of draft alongside. Total number of gantry cranes now in operation is twenty, and the overall storage space increased to 450,000 square metres.

There is easy access from the open sea and containers are handled by ship to shore gantries plus a full complement of yard gantries, RTG's, tractors, trailers and forklifts. KCT has storage facility for over 45,000 TEUs, and a 3,000 sq.metre dedicated transit shed and storage area for LCL cargo. KCT also has the capability to accommodate in excess of 1,000 reefer containers at the facility.

Major Shipping Lines calling at KCT include United Arab Shipping Company (UASC), CMA-CGM, China Shipping, Hanjin, Sea Consortium, MOL & Hapag Lloyd.
